Hi, I'm the failure it's me

  • Failed to understand my scope in a project. (Turned out okay. Maybe better than okay. But don't try to tell that to 3 a.m. me.)

  • Failed to meet my own deadline of getting a newsletter out today. (Truly, absolutely, no one cares. Right?)

  • There are two other deadlines I've let slip, and that feels shitty. One is a Big Failure that may be redeemable but damn; the other is an almost that could still land in the success column.

  • Failed to find joy in making today's graphic—having failed again to find the word 'failure' in print.

  • Continue to fail to match the successes of my friends, peers, and clients: social media virality; a prime-time interview on public radio; a script in consideration with a major Hollywood producer; acceptance from atraditional publishers; endorsements from famous-for-good-reasons people.

I did not fail to cut my hair in the dark during a most dramatic thunderstorm.

I did not fail to support those friends and peers in their astronomical and well-deserved successes.

And I did not fail to post here today. Woot.

To failure.

The land on which I operate (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada) is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, Neutral Peoples, and other Indigenous Peoples from all over Turtle Island. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and is within the land protected by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreement. I offer my sincere gratitude and respect to the original and continued stewards of this land.

I also acknowledge Indigenous, Black, people of colour, women, non-binary folks, and 2SLGBTQQAI+ people who have all been marginalized for centuries, and our collective responsibility to take action toward a world free from oppression, discrimination and racism.

ImpNet intends to keep trying to do better, and inspiring others to try too.

Taking one step away from being this kind of org, I donate 5% of all ImpNet income to payyourrent.ca, the Nii’kinaaganaa Foundation: Collecting rent and redistributing it to Indigenous People.
